The Consumer Guide for Tanning Beds & Tanning Lamps

Horizontal Tanning Beds

Horizontal tanning beds, sometimes called capsule or clamshell tanning beds, consist of a lower section that you lie on and an upper section that is hinged that you close over yourself. This is the type of tanning bed found in most tanning salons and homes.

The main difference between home tanning beds and commercial tanning beds is the outer construction and the quality of tanning lamps installed. Commercial tanning beds tend to have bulbs that are rated 1,000 hours between changes while home tanning bed lamps are more likely rated for 500 hours.

Other differences with commercial tanning beds is that they tend to come with more amenities such as facial lamps, heavy-duty cooling fans, sophisticated digital timers that can be remotely operated by the front desk, and CD/FM stereo players with speakers.
