The Consumer Guide for Tanning Beds & Tanning Lamps

High Pressure Tanning Beds

High pressure tanning beds use quartz tanning lamps instead of UV lamps to produce tanning. The term high pressure refers to the fact that the quartz bulbs are under a higher air pressure than that of UV lamps (or even the surrounding atmosphere).

High pressure tanning bed lamps produce a lower amount of UVB rays, which produce burning, and a higher amount of UVA rays, which promotes tanning. Often cobalt filters and parabolic reflectors are used in high pressure beds to further reduce the amount of UVB rays while concentrating the UVA rays, thus giving you a faster tan without burning.

Such tanning beds are quite stylish in appearance and feature an "open-cage" design.
