The Consumer Guide for Tanning Beds & Tanning Lamps

Top Buying Tips for Tanning Beds

1. Get a tanning bed with an electronic ballast. Electronic ballasts provide a good balance of reliability and performance over tanning beds that have magnetic or choke ballasts. Also note that tanning beds which use choke ballasts also require lamp starters and buck boosters, which adds to the cost and weight without delivering any value.

2. Get a tanning bed with facial lamps. These are small, specialized lamps located in the head region of tanning beds and help promote tanning of the face.

3. Get the long-life tanning bulbs. Most tanning lamps come with either a 500-hour or a 1,000-hour typical lifetime. You should opt for the long-life bulbs as you will have to replace them only half as often yet they don't cost twice that of the shorter-lived lamps.

4. Decide how much time you have per tanning session. Most tanning beds and booths are designed to provide either an optimum 10-minute tanning session or a 20-minute tanning session. Decide how much time you want to spend per session and this will dictate to some extent the bed you purchase.

5. Don't get confused about the Wolff brand. Wolff doesn't actually manufacture tanning beds. Rather they receive royalties from manufacturers for the use of their name. Wolff produces high-quality tanning lamps, but not the actual bed.
