The Consumer Guide for Tanning Beds & Tanning Lamps

Tanning Bed Buck Boosters

Also called buck boost transformers, these electrical devices are used in choke-ballast lamp starter systems found in some tanning beds. A buck booster will either buck (decrease) or boost (increase) the incoming voltage to match the voltage the bed was designed to operate with.

If your tanning bed was manufactured in Europe, which commonly uses the choke ballast system, you will need to have a buck booster installed for it to operate correctly in the USA. You should always consult the tanning bed manufacturer to see if a buck boost transformer is required and if so, what size. The main sizes are 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 KVA.
